Magnificent Foxface — Siganus magnificus
(Venomous spines)

Algae-eating rabbitfish. Peaceful, robust.

Quick facts

  • Size: 20–24 cm

  • Temperament: Peaceful, may display to similar fish

  • Reef-safe: With caution (may nip softies/LPS if underfed)

  • Minimum tank: 400+ l / 100+ gal

  • Special: Dorsal spines are venomous

Aquarium

  • Space: Long tank with open lanes and rockwork for grazing and cover.

  • Water: pH 8.1–8.4, salinity 1.025–1.026, temp 24–26 °C; NH3/NO2 0, NO3 <20 ppm, PO4 <0.1 ppm.

  • Flow: Moderate.

  • Lighting: Standard reef; stress “pajama” camouflage is normal.

  • Cover: Recommended. Startles easily.

Diet

  • Primary: Macroalgae and film algae, including hair algae.

  • Daily feed: Nori/seaweed sheets, spirulina pellets, herbivore flakes; add occasional mysis/roe for variety.

  • Goal: Keep well fed to minimize coral nipping.

Behavior and compatibility

  • Community: Good with most peaceful to semi-assertive species.

  • Conspecifics: One per tank unless a proven pair in a very large system.

  • Corals/inverts: Usually safe; monitor with fleshy LPS, zoas, and clams.

Acclimation and care

  • Acclimate: 30–45 min drip; dim lights.

  • Handling: Use a container, not a net. Spines snag and can envenomate.

  • Health: Hardy; provide varied greens to prevent nutritional issues.

Venom note

  • If stung, immerse the area in tolerably hot water for 30–90 minutes and seek medical advice.

Selection checklist

  • Clear eyes, steady breathing, active grazing.

  • Eats nori and pellets at the store.

  • No fin erosion or pinched belly.
