The Tuxedo Urchin (Mespilia globulus) is a popular and reef-safe sea urchin known for its compact size and distinctive blue and black banded appearance. It is an effective algae grazer and an excellent addition to the clean-up crew in reef aquariums.

This species is also known for decorating itself with small shells, rubble, or coral fragments as camouflage.


Behavior & Compatibility

Completely peaceful and safe with fish and corals.

May move unsecured coral frags or small rocks while grazing.

Best kept singly unless housed in a larger system with sufficient algae growth.

Primarily consumes:
• Film algae
• Coralline algae
• Hair algae

If natural algae becomes limited, supplement with dried marine algae (nori).
