Algae and detritus grazer. Reef-safe.

Quick facts

  • Size: 1–3 cm shell length

  • Temperament: Peaceful

  • Reef-safe: Yes

  • Role: Film algae, diatom, and detritus control

  • Care level: Easy

Aquarium requirements

  • Tank: ≥ 30 l; mature rockwork recommended.

  • Substrate: Fine sand ideal; burrows and stirs top layer.

  • Water: pH 8.1–8.4, salinity 1.025–1.026, temp 24–26 °C; NH3/NO2 0, NO3 <20 ppm.

  • Flow: Low–moderate.

Diet

  • Primary: Film algae, diatoms, biofilm, leftover fish food.

  • Supplement: Algae wafers or tiny pellet crumbs if the tank is very clean.

Behavior and compatibility

  • Nocturnal to crepuscular; climbs glass and rock, buries in sand by day.

  • Safe with corals and most fish.

  • Avoid housing with snail-eaters (certain wrasses, triggers, puffers).

Acclimation and care

  • Drip acclimate 30–45 min; match salinity closely.

  • Do not expose to air during transfer if possible.

  • Keep shells upright if flipped; prolonged inversion can be fatal.

Stocking guide

  • 120 l: 6–10 snails

  • 250 l+: 12–20 snails

Notes

  • Not a solution for hair algae by itself; pair with other grazers.

  • Breeds in captivity; planktonic larvae rarely survive in displays.
