Gem Tang (Zebrasoma gemmatum)
The Gem Tang is one of the most coveted surgeonfish in the hobby, admired for its jet-black body sprinkled with brilliant white speckles and a striking yellow tail. Native to the waters around Mauritius and Madagascar, this rare beauty has a calm, stately presence that instantly becomes the centerpiece of any display.
Appearance: Deep black coloration with shimmering white “gems” scattered across the body and fins, contrasted by a bright yellow tail.
Adult size: Up to 20 cm.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but may show territorial behavior toward other tangs. Best introduced as the only Zebrasoma in the system unless in a very large tank.
Tank requirements: Minimum 500 L with strong water movement, open swimming space, and plenty of rockwork for grazing and hiding.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous. Feed a varied diet rich in marine algae, nori, and quality herbivore formulas; will also accept frozen foods.
Care level: Advanced. Requires stable reef conditions and excellent water quality.
This is not a fish for beginners or nano tanks—think of it as the Ferrari of tangs: beautiful, rare, and needing proper “garage space” to thrive.
