Red Mangrove (Rhizophora mangle) – Propagule

The Red Mangrove is a tropical coastal plant originally from the Caribbean, now found across many warm shorelines worldwide. Its propagules (seedlings) are already germinated while attached to the parent tree and can continue to grow once placed in water or substrate. This makes them easy to keep in aquariums, paludariums, or even as an ornamental houseplant in a glass vase.

Why aquarists love them

• Suitable for saltwater, brackish, or freshwater aquariums
• Excellent for refugiums, paludariums, or decorative set-ups
• Root systems act as a natural filter, absorbing nitrate, phosphate, and organics
• Provide shade and shelter for small animals, enhancing biodiversity

Easy to grow

• Place the thicker end of the propagule in water or sand/soil, keeping the leaves above the surface
• Thrives in bright light – aquarium LEDs, a spotlight, or natural sunlight by a window
• Grows slowly but steadily in water temperatures of 20–30 °C
• Substrate is optional: you can let roots grow freely in water or anchor in sand/soil
• Leaves naturally excrete salt and can be rinsed occasionally with fresh water
