Ricordea florida is a stunning and resilient mushroom coral species native to the Caribbean and Florida Keys. Compared to its Indo-Pacific cousin Ricordea yuma, it is rarer in European markets due to limited export availability and strict collection regulations in its native region. Most specimens arrive only sporadically through select importers, and high-quality, aquacultured polyps are especially uncommon.
Care Level: ★☆☆☆☆ – Very Easy
Exceptionally hardy and adaptable, R. florida tolerates a wide range of conditions. It thrives under stable water parameters, moderate light, and gentle flow, making it ideal for both beginner and advanced reef keepers.
Lighting: Moderate (LED or T5). Acclimate slowly to higher intensities.
Flow: Low to moderate, just enough to prevent detritus from settling.
Placement: Mount on live rock or rubble in shaded to mid-level areas. Will gradually spread into vibrant colonies.
Feeding: Optional. Gains most energy from photosynthesis, but occasional feeding with fine coral foods enhances growth and color.
Why it’s rare:
Unlike Ricordea yuma, which is collected and grown in large numbers from Indonesia, R. florida comes from the Caribbean where coral export is heavily restricted. Most available specimens are propagated in captivity rather than wild-collected, which makes them both sustainable and limited in supply.
