Algae Blenny “Jewel/Starry” — Salarias ramosus
Algae-focused grazer. Perching combtooth blenny. May nip if underfed.
Quick facts
Size: 12–14 cm
Temperament: Semi-peaceful, territorial to similar fish
Reef-safe: Generally; may nip clam mantles or fleshy SPS/LPS if hungry
Minimum tank: 120+ l / 30+ gal
Role: Film and microalgae control
Aquascape: Extensive live rock with constant graze surfaces and perches.
Water: pH 8.1–8.4, salinity 1.025–1.026, temp 24–26 °C; NH3/NO2 0, NO3 <20 ppm.
Flow: Low–moderate with calmer shelves.
Cover: Advisable. Can jump when chased.
Primary: Film algae, diatoms, turf; scrapes biofilm with comb teeth.
Supplement daily: Nori on clip, spirulina/algae pellets, herbivore flakes; occasional mysis/roe for variety.
Goal: Full belly and steady grazing to prevent coral/clam nipping.
Territory: Defends favorite rocks against other blennies and similar-shaped grazers.
Best with: Peaceful community fish that ignore it.
Avoid: Other Salarias, lawnmower/starry look-alikes, and very aggressive tankmates.
Mature tank: Prefer systems with visible algae/biofilm. Newly set tanks risk starvation.
Acclimate: Drip 30–45 min. Offer nori immediately if algae is scarce.
Health cue: Pinched belly indicates underfeeding.
Dark body with white “starry” speckles, cirri above eyes, robust head profile. Often sold as Jewel or Starry Blenny; distinct from S. fasciatus (Lawnmower).
