Hi-fin Banded Goby ( Stonogobiops nematodes ), also known as the Red/Blackray Prawn Goby , is a small, peaceful species reaching about 4 cm. In the wild it inhabits Sandy Reef slopes (20–45 m), where it lives in symbiosis with pistol shrimps ( Alpheus randalli ). The shrimp digs and maintains the burrow while the goby keeps watch for predators, creating a captivating partnership that can also be observed in the aquarium.

In captivity, this goby is best kept in pairs, ideally a bonded male–female, in tanks from 60 L upwards with Sandy substrate, rubble for burrow construction, and plenty of live rock. It is shy and should not be housed with large or aggressive fish. Feeding is simple, as it readily accepts flakes, granules, and frozen foods. Hardy, easy to keep, and reef-safe , it makes a fascinating and rewarding addition to peaceful Reef aquaria—though tanks must be securely covered, as this species may jump.
