Acanthastrea echinata
Acanthastrea echinata is a striking LPS coral that forms massive and often irregularly shaped coral colonies. The coral's surface consists of large corallites, or polyps, surrounded by thick tissue and a distinct structure. The species is particularly known for its vibrant colours and contrasting patterns.
Acanthastrea echinata corals occur in various colour morphs. Typical shades include green, turquoise, red, orange, brown, and purple, often in multicoloured combinations. Many individuals' polyps or their margins fluoresce strongly under blue aquarium lighting, making the coral a spectacular addition to a reef aquarium.
In a reef aquarium, Acanthastrea echinata typically thrives in the lower to middle sections of the tank, where lighting is low to moderate and flow is gentle. The species grows relatively slowly but over time forms thick and expanding coral structures on the rock surface.

Good to know
Acanthastrea echinata can extend sweeper tentacles to defend its space. Therefore, it is advisable to leave sufficient space around the coral so that it does not harm nearby corals.
Suitability
- suitable for reef aquariums
