Conventional alternating current power is produced by rotating machines (alternators) that produce a smooth alternation, such as that of a pendulum. It is mathematically described as a "sine wave". It is the ideal waveform for transferring alternating current.

When Converting alternating current to direct current, most direct current control units will convert the alternating voltage to a direct current square wave or direct current modified square wave. For the most part, a DC-modified square wave often emulates a True Sine wave reasonably well, but the driven pump will often work with Audible levels of noise and a somewhat "jerky" effect due to the stepped rectangular waveform compared to a smooth True Sine Wave.

Using the True Sine Wave technology, the new SOW sine wave pumps result in quiet and smooth operation that extends the life of the flow pump / wavemaker.
