Acanthastrea echinata is a striking LPS coral that forms massive and often irregularly shaped colonies. The coral's surface consists of large corallites or polyps surrounded by thick tissue and a distinctly structured appearance. The species is particularly known for its vibrant colors and contrasting patterns.

Acanthastrea echinata corals come in various color forms. Typical shades include green, turquoise, red, orange, brown, and purple, often in multicolored combinations. Many specimens' polyps or their margins fluoresce strongly under blue aquarium lighting, making the coral a spectacular addition to a reef aquarium.

In a reef aquarium, Acanthastrea echinata usually thrives in the lower to middle sections of the tank, where lighting is low to moderate and flow is gentle. The species grows relatively slowly but, over time, forms thick and expanding coral structures on the rock surface.
