Duncanopsammia axifuga – Duncan Coral
Duncanopsammia axifuga, known among hobbyists as Duncan Coral, is a popular LPS coral in reef aquariums. It forms branching calcareous skeletons with large, distinct polyps developing at their ends. The polyps somewhat resemble an anemone: they have a mouth in the center surrounded by several long tentacles that open during the day.
In a reef aquarium, Duncan Coral is generally a robust and adaptable species. It thrives in moderate lighting and gentle to medium flow, where the polyps can move naturally. In good conditions, the polyps expand significantly, and the coral grows new branches, making it an impressive colony over time.
Duncanopsammia typically occurs in various shades of green, but some individuals may have brownish, turquoise, or slightly yellowish hues. The center of the polyp and the tentacles can fluoresce strongly under blue aquarium lighting.
