The Stenopus zanzibaricus is a rarer cousin of the well-known coral banded shrimp. Instead of the classic red-and-white stripes, this species sports a golden-yellow body with translucent legs and white antennae. It’s an eye-catching choice for aquarists who want something unusual but still hardy.

Appearance: Golden to orange body, slender claws, long white antennae. More delicate build compared to S. hispidus.

Adult size: Around 5–6 cm.

Temperament: Territorial toward other shrimp of the same species or closely related ones. Generally peaceful with fish but can harass very small or weak tankmates. Best kept singly or as a bonded pair.
Tank requirements: Minimum 80 L with plenty of caves or rock crevices. Prefers dimmer areas and will claim a lair.

Diet: Opportunistic omnivore. Accepts meaty frozen foods (mysis, brine, chopped seafood) and scavenges leftovers. Will also pick parasites and dead tissue off tankmates, giving it “cleaner” behavior.

Care level: Moderate. Hardy once established, but like all stenopids, sensitive to rapid changes in salinity or pH. Needs stable reef conditions.

This isn’t your everyday “cleaner shrimp.” S. zanzibaricus is the flashy golden boxer that shows up at the party looking like it raided a jewelry store.
