Goniopora sp. – Flowerpot Coral

Goniopora corals are known for their long, flower-like polyps, which is why they are often called Flowerpot Corals. Individual polyps can extend several centimeters long and together form a softly moving, flower-like coral colony reminiscent of a field of flowers. The polyps move gracefully in the current, bringing spectacular natural movement to a reef aquarium.

Goniopora corals come in many different color morphs. Typical shades include green, red, pink, purple, yellow, and turquoise, as well as various multicolor combinations. Many color morphs fluoresce strongly under blue aquarium lighting.

In the aquarium hobby, there are also particularly striking and valuable color morphs. These are often referred to as, for example, Ultra-colored specimens or Glitter Goniopora style variants, where the polyps shimmer especially brightly and form a strong contrast to the coral's base color. Such rare and intense color morphs can be significantly more valuable than common specimens.

In a reef aquarium, Goniopora usually thrives in the lower or middle part of the tank, where lighting is low to moderate and flow is gentle but continuous. Too strong a current can prevent the polyps from fully opening. In good conditions, the polyps open widely, and the coral forms a larger growth over time.

Good to know

Goniopora corals can benefit from fine planktonic food, such as coral food powders or small plankton particles. Additionally, sufficient availability of manganese (Manganese) in the water is an important trace element for the well-being of Goniopora corals and can support polyp extension and growth.
