Lobophytum sp. – Devil’s Hand Leather Coral
Lobophytum is a genus of soft corals, commonly known in English as Devil’s Hand Leather Coral. It forms a thick and often finger-like branching coral colony, with small polyps on its surface that open in light and flow. The coral's surface can be smooth or slightly bumpy, and colors typically range from light brown to greenish or yellowish hues.
In a reef aquarium, Lobophytum is a durable and adaptable soft coral, suitable for both beginner and experienced hobbyists. It thrives in moderate lighting and moderate flow, which helps keep the coral's surface clean. In good conditions, the polyps open widely, and the coral brings natural movement to the aquarium.
Lobophytum generally grows slowly but steadily and can over time form a rather large coral colony. It is a typical choice for mixed reef aquariums alongside fish, other soft corals, and many LPS corals.

Care Requirements
Characteristic Recommendation
Difficulty easy
Lighting low – medium
Flow moderate
Placement in aquarium low – mid level
Growth rate slow – moderate
Good to know
Lobophytum may occasionally form a thin layer of mucus on its surface, which it sheds when regenerating. During this time, the polyps may be closed for a moment. Sufficient flow helps remove the mucus layer and restores the coral's normal function.
Suitability
well suited for reef aquariums
generally compatible with fish and invertebrates
a good choice for beginners as well
